Simon Capp
Financial Planner
“I am on a mission to save retirement. I work as a Financial Planner so my clients can choose when they retire, and what they retire too. In retirement we need to be heading to a ‘retirement of purpose’. For most that will mean some careful thinking, planning, preparation and commitment. Most people will seek help, guidance and advice and that’s why I exist.”
In late 2017 I left NAB where I was working as the General Manager of their Advice Business in SANT and WA. I knew that the current model wasn’t going to work, but I knew there would be a better way. So, I made the decision to ‘step out’ of the corporate world, to focus on building Adelaide’s most respected Advice Business.
Advice I specialise in includes:
I believe you need to get the fundamentals right. Building strong financial foundations is the pre-requisite when I work with clients to map out the strategy that will help them achieve their goals. Here are some of the “problems” that our clients are asking me to work with them on:
- When to retire?
- How to fund that retirement?
- What am I retiring too?
- How they might manage the couple’s dilemma
- Making sure there is an investment strategy for their retirement savings
- Ensuring that their estate and non-estate assets are going to the people they want
- Building a strategy that will allow them to have the ‘right amount of money, at the right time and that it is in the right hands’
- Making sure their money will outlast them, so they can retire with dignity
- Ensuring that we have a strategy to manage finances to maximise government entitlements, and minimise excess tax obligations

I live on the beautiful south coast in Port Elliot. Spare time is spent chasing the kids around the coast or mooching around coffee shops. It’s a long drive, but when my toes hit the sand, I know I am home.

I live in the Adelaide Hills with my husband, Brett. We have two adult children and one delightful granddaughter. I can’t keep up the pace of running with Brett and prefer long walks instead.
Tim Smith
Financial Planner
“In the last few years, as I approached 40, I would occasionally reflect on the fact my waistline didn’t resemble the one I had at 21. Each time I did, I concluded I needed to do something about it. Like most of us, I knew what I needed to do and how to get started. I also knew it wasn’t simple, it would take discipline. I’d have to give up the second dinner (not always joking!) and move around a bit more. Early in 2019, I finally took action – likely more than a few years after the initial thought! And whilst it’s only been a year, I put the successful change to my habits down to the fact I have had great guidance and accountability from my gym.”
The reason I share this is I believe the story is often very similar with people and their finances. Often, we have aspirations that we’re not achieving, have a bit of an idea what we need to do but either have difficulty getting started or struggle to stay the course. Working with a financial planner is much like working with a personal trainer or coach. We help you work out what is most important to you and then provide the support you need to make it happen. For the long-term.
In 2019 I made what was a really big decision for me and my family when I chose to leave my executive role at NAB to help run Treehouse Financial Planning with Simon. What made the decision easy was the opportunity to make a positive difference in the lives of good people in a business that has always done advice the right way.
Advice I specialise in includes:
There are very few secrets to successful wealth creation. You have to get the basics right and know what you’re aiming for. At Treehouse Financial Planning we believe that building strong financial foundations is the pre-requisite for achieving your life goals.
Here are some of the “dreams, fears and aspirations” that our clients ask me to support them in achieving:
- Getting their budget in order
- Making sure that they are putting away for that rainy day
- Paying off bad debts like credit card and personal loans
- Helping them put away for their first home
- Making sure they understand how their superannuation is invested
- Investing superannuation in a way that is appropriate for their aspirations and attitude toward risk
- Making sure estate and non-estate assets get into the hands of the people they want – “the right amount of money, in the right hands, at the right time”
- Making sure they have a ‘plan b’
- Making sure their money will outlast them, so they can retire with dignity
- How to work with Centrelink and ensure they get the support they are entitled to
- Making sure that the tax they pay is not more than it should be
- Provide accountability so they stay honest to their goal of having the mortgage repaid well before retirement

Being busy. I hate to be idle. If I’m not playing with the kids or enjoying a rare night out with my wife, you’ll find that I’ve given myself a little project. The most recent being the rendering of my home!
